Firenze,Florence,Florencja

At last 'they' managed to retrieve our broadband connection and after a week of internet silence I can finally post some of those Florentine photos I mentioned. There are hundreds but,in a very considerate approach, I'm limiting myself to only a handful.

A fragment of ancient inscription on a town house wall.

I did feel sorry for the horses as that day was the hottest so far,44 Celsius.

Some of the amazing  detail on the exterior of the Duomo

Intricate use of three different colour marble.

A view from the Ponte Vecchio

We didn't get to see the real David, we'll leave that for a weekend in Autumn, but the copy seemed to live up to it's reputation of being a masterpiece in it's own right.

Even the polizi look stylish.

The other side of Ponte Vecchio

The painted ceiling of the Duomo

I love this photo. It is so crisp with the contrast of the man-made beauty against that gloriously celestial sky.
The  Gate of Paradise by Lorenzo Ghiberti 1425-52c
It was Michelangelo who first described this door as The Gate of Paradise because of the symbolic importance of its position on the east side of the Baptistry.

Each panel beautifully depicts scenes from the Old Testament.

Self portrait of Lorenzo Ghiberti

We popped into the town museum which houses a fabulous collection of marble sculptures including some early and unfinished works form the master himself, Michelangelo.
Bacchus by Michelangelo

Brutus by Michelangelo, unfinished but still beautiful.

FONTANA DEL BIANCONE ( The Neptune Fountain) 16th century.

After a quick stop for a double espresso we deposited a few customary Euros at the LUCKY BOAR wishing well, rubbed his snout and headed for the train station to make our way home.

Almost missed our train due to a fantastic street parade. All participants were dressed in period costumes inspite of the unbearable heat.

It went on...

and on...

and on.

Not everyone was happy about taking part.

I'm sure it did eventually end but our train was waiting to take us back to this.

AAAaaahhh :)
Wishing you all a lovely week.
See you soon

Oooh....I could jump straight into that pool!
What a wonderful time you have had in the Italian sunshine, lots of sightseeing and the wedding of course.
Bring some sunshine back to the UK please...I am so sick of this drizzly, damp summer.
